Djorgovski 2 is a moderately metal-poor globular cluster, study finds

Based on data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and from the Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers have gained insights into a galactic globular cluster known as Djorgovski 2. Besides determining fundamental parameters of the object, the new research classified Djorgovski 2 as a moderately metal-poor globular cluster. The findings are presented in a paper published June 27 on arXiv.org. Source:…

We go between Saturn and the sun July 9

This is Saturn’s yearly opposition. The ringed planet is now opposite the sun in our sky, rising at sunset, highest up for the night around midnight and setting at sunrise. It’s at its brightest and and best for 2019. Source: https://earthsky.org/tonight/saturn-closest-and-brightest…

Astronomers ponder halos around galaxies

Galaxies are massive and beautiful islands of stars. But did you know that most galaxies are surrounded by halos? A complex instrument on the Very Large Telescope is giving astronomers new views of these galactic rings of light. Source: https://earthsky.org/space/galaxies-halos-muse-very-large-telescope-eso…

Atmosphere of mid-size planet revealed by Hubble and Spitzer

Two NASA space telescopes have teamed up to identify, for the first time, the detailed chemical “fingerprint” of a planet between the sizes of Earth and Neptune. No planets like this can be found in our own solar system, but they are common around other stars. Source: https://phys.org/news/2019-07-atmosphere-mid-size-planet-revealed-hubble.html…

Hubble captures cosmic fireworks in ultraviolet

Hubble offers a special view of the double star system Eta Carinae’s expanding gases glowing in red, white, and blue. This is the highest resolution image of Eta Carinae taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Source: https://phys.org/news/2019-07-hubble-captures-cosmic-fireworks-ultraviolet.html…

When asteroids photobomb galaxies

Hubble is the ultimate multitasker: Discovering asteroids while it’s doing other observations

It looks like a poster of the famous Hubble Deep Field, marked with white streaks by a child, or put away carelessly and scratched in the process. But it’s not. The white streaks aren’t accidents; they’re the paths of asteroids. Source: https://phys.org/news/2019-06-hubble-ultimate-multitasker-asteroids.html…

Viewing Saturn’s rings soon? Read me 1st

The best time of 2019 for seeing Saturn’s glorious rings is upon us. You’ve seen the photos, but maybe you want to see the rings with your own eyes? Here are a few things to think about. Source: https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/viewing-saturns-rings-tips-for-beginners…

Hubble finds tiny ‘electric soccer balls’ in space, helps solve interstellar mystery

Scientists using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have confirmed the presence of electrically-charged molecules in space shaped like soccer balls, shedding light on the mysterious contents of the interstellar medium (ISM) – the gas and dust that fills interstellar space.
