Fix Google Chrome screen flashing on Windows 10

Some Google Chrome users on Windows 10 have reported for some time screen flickering issues when they use the web browser.

The issue dates back to as early as January 2018 and recent bug reports suggest that it has not been addressed until now.

Screen flickering is not the only issue that some Chrome users experience on Windows 10. Other issues include Chrome’s black screen issue or black bottom bar issue, or Chrome font display issues.

Just like with any other issue that users may experience, there are multiple solutions that users may try to resolve the issue.

To describe the issue: Chrome’s window starts to flash regularly when the issue exists, e.g. every other minute or so.

Fixing Chrome Screen Flickering

The general consensus is that the screen flashing has something to do with Windows background and color settings. Making changes to the configuration appears to fix the issue for most Chrome users who experience it.

It is suggested that video card drivers are updated to the most recent version before any other attempts are made. Also, it is a good idea to keep Chrome up to date.

The solution

Open the Settings application on the Windows 10 device. You may use the shortcut Windows-I for that, or click on Start and select Settings from there.

Switch to Personalization in the Settings application; this should load the Background preferences right away as it is the default page. If not, select Background on the left side.

There you need to select Solid Color as the new background. It seems that Windows’ automatic background switching is the most likely culprit and that Chrome somehow has issues with the setting.

You can try to set a static background image as well if you prefer that.

Select a solid color to display the desktop background in.

Once you are done, switch to the Colors section under Personalization.

You could try and see if changing the background settings is enough to address the screen flashing issue in Google Chrome.

Second solution

Some users reported that they disabled hardware acceleration in Chrome and that this fixed the issue on their end.

If you want to give it a try, load chrome://settings/ in Chrome’s address bar and click on the advanced link at the bottom of the page that opens.

Scroll down to the System section and toggle “Use hardware acceleration when available” so that it is off. Restart the browser to see if that resolved the screen flickering issue.
