What program did you take on edX, and what were your goals in taking it?
Six Sigma and Lean: Quantitative Tools for Quality and Productivity Professional Certificate program from TUMx. Although I have a background in engineering, I was starting a new career in performance excellence (continuous improvement of processes and reduction of waste). I wanted to learn the concepts and tools to succeed and to earn credentials for my new position.
How has the program helped you?
The instruction was excellent, so I did indeed learn how to apply the methods of Lean and Six Sigma throughout the various business units of my organization. I also have a professional certification, which will help me as I am moving to a new city soon and am interested in continuing work in this field.
What did you like most about learning online?
Certainly, I liked the flexibility to work at my own pace and as my schedule allowed. I liked being able to pause or re-play instructional videos and read the lesson’s text as well. I was pleasantly surprised that student questions were answered so quickly and thoroughly by the professors through the site.
Did your coursework result in any direct outcomes (career or personal)?
Yes, both career and personal. I have earned both a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt and Green Belt Certification (the latter upon completion of a Green Belt project in addition to the coursework) and have saved my company thousands of dollars in material costs and by solving process problems in the areas of Accounting, Manufacturing, Retail, Janitorial Services, and Donation Processing.
What advice would you give new edX students?
Allow enough time to study this material. Know how you learn best – for instance, although there were course handouts provided for each lesson, I learned better by taking my own notes, which took more time but helped me absorb and understand the material better. Do not attempt to rush through the material if you want to be successful.
Anything else you’d like to share about your experience with edX and how it has helped to advance your studies?
I found this course very thorough. The instruction was loaded with case studies, which are extremely helpful in understanding the concepts. The instruction videos were excellent and the instructor Holly Ott was very responsive to questions. She answered any course questions on a daily basis, and students have the opportunity to share ideas with each other and answer each other’s questions as well.
