We sat down with Daniel Michaelis, manager of the virtual factory at a startup in Germany. Daniel took the Six Sigma Professional Certificate program from TUMx, and used the knowledge that he learned to help him get a new job and further his career in industrial engineering and production management.
What program did you take on edX, and what were your goals in taking it?
I took the three part program called Six Sigma and Lean: Quantitative Tools for Quality and Productivity from TUMx in order to develop my career towards industrial engineering and production management.
How has the program helped you?
The program helped me twofold: I had an additional certificate to differentiate myself from other job applicants and it gave me the confidence to apply to more advanced positions. It really gave my CV a boost! It demonstrated my motivation due to the fact that the certificate was earned in my free time.
What did you like most about learning online?
I did my first MOOC in 2012 and was instantly hooked. My passion is to continuously learn new things and new skills – I achieve this mostly through reading, and then, also through edX. I like that MOOCs represent a novel way of developing oneself. And similar to reading books, you can choose your own progressing pace.
Did your coursework result in any direct outcomes (career or personal)?
The methodological knowledge from the program absolutely helped me to achieve a big step in my professional career as “Manager Virtual Factory” at the fast-growing start-up LASERHUB in Stuttgart, Germany. I am responsible for the quality of our decentralized production of metal sheet components and have to further develop the capabilities in our supplier network.
What advice would you give new edX learners?
Start with smaller course to find out if online courses are suited for your style of learning.
Anything else you would like to share about your experience with edX and how it has helped to advance your studies?
Knowledge is abundant and extremely easily accessed nowadays. I recommend that everyone takes advantage of that!
